Alates of the Eastern subterranean termite, Reticulitermes flavipes (Kollar) were collected over two flight seasons (2002 and 2004) and flown on flight mills. Data were collected to test if alate mass, colony origin, or gender influenced flight speed. Flight speed ranged from 3.14 to 69.12 cm s−1 and the maximum distance flown by an alate was 458.3 m. Alate mass (P = 0.9406), gender (P = 0.3976), colony origin (P = 0.1244), and the interaction of gender and colony (P = 0.7093) did not significantly influence flight speed. Additionally, an electronic counting device was used to provide instantaneous flight speeds and allowed flight speed to be modeled during acceleration, cruising, and deceleration periods of flight. Mean (±SEM) flight speeds in 2004 were 20.64 (±2.21) cm s−1 (n = 13) for males and 17.76 cm s−1 (n = 1) for the single female flown, falling within the range of the 2002 values.  相似文献

The effect of two culture configurations (single collagen gel and double collagen gel) and of two hormones (insulin and glucagon) on the differentiated status and the intracellular nucleotide pools of primary porcine hepatocytes was investigated. The objective was to analyze and monitor the current state of differentiation supported by the two culture modes using intracellular nucleotide analysis. Specific intracellular nucleotide ratios, namely the nucleoside triphosphate (NTP) and the uridine (U) ratio were shown to consistently reflect the state of dedifferentiation status of the primary cells in culture affected by the presence of the two hormones insulin and glucagon. Continuous dedifferentiation of the cells was monitored in parallel by the reduction of the secretion of albumin, and changes in UDP-activated hexoses and UDP-glucuronate. The presence of insulin maintained the differentiated status of hepatocytes for more than 12 days when cultivated under double gel conditions whereas glucagon was less effective. In contrast, cells cultivated in a single gel matrix immediately started to dedifferentiate upon seeding. NTP and U ratios were shown to be more sensitive for monitoring dedifferentiation in culture than the albumin secretion. Their use allowed the generation of an easily applicable NTP–U plot in order to give a direct graphical representation of the current differentiation status of the cultured cells. Moreover, the transition from functional and differentiated hepatocytes to dedifferentiated fibroblasts could be determined earlier by the nucleotide ratios compared to the conventional method of monitoring the albumin secretion rate.  相似文献

Comparison between the middle ear anatomy of the Cape golden mole (Chrysochloris asiatica), which exhibits a club-shaped malleus head, and the Desert golden mole (Eremitalpa granti), with a ball-shaped malleus head, suggests differences in sensitivity to airborne sound. Scanning laser Doppler vibrometric measurements of the ossicular behavior in response to both vibration and airborne sound were made in C. asiatica. Two distinct vibrational modes were observed. In response to low-frequency vibration (70–200 Hz), the malleus oscillates about the ligament of the short process of the incus, whereas in response to high-frequency airborne sound (1–6 kHz) the ossicular chain rotates about the long axis of malleus. It is proposed that the club-shaped malleus head in C. asiatica constitutes an adaptation towards bimodal hearing—sensitivity to substrate vibrations and airborne sound. Possible functional differences between these two middle ear types are discussed.  相似文献

The barn owl, a nocturnal predator, derives its German name (“Schleiereule”, direct English translation “veil owl”) from the conspicuous ruff that covers the ear openings and gives the head a face-like appearance. The ruff is a specialization for the perception of sound. The densely-ramified reflector feathers forming the border of the ruff direct sound to the ear-openings. We studied the influence of the ruff on the behaviorally relevant sound-localization parameters interaural time difference (ITD) and interaural level difference (ILD). The directionality of the ear was much greater when the ruff was intact than when the reflector feathers were removed. With ruff intact, the distribution of ILDs was oblique and the maximum ITD occurred around 110° of azimuth. When all head feathers were removed, the steepest ILD gradient was much closer to the horizontal axis and ITD was maximal at 90°. Many effects were frequency specific. Thus, the ruff reflects some properties of the human pinna. However, by shifting the point where ITD becomes maximal beyond 90°, the ruff also introduces a break of the front–back symmetry of ITD.  相似文献

Microsatellite DNA markers for a critically endangered Mekong giant catfish (Pangasianodon gigas Roberts and Vidthayanon, 1991) were developed from fin clips collected from captive fish using (GT)15 probe. The number of alleles per locus ranged from two to four. The expected heterozygosities ranged from 0.13 to 0.68. Also, these primers were successfully amplified in four closely related species, Pangasius bocourti, Pangasius conchophilus, Pangasius larnaudii and Pangasius sanitwongsei with the number of alleles per locus ranged from 1 to 13, 1 to 16, 1 to 12 and 1 to 4, respectively. These markers should prove to be very useful for the evaluation of genetic diversity for this species and other related Pangasius species.  相似文献

Aims Invasive plants modify the structure and functioning of natural environments and threat native plant communities. Invasive species are often favored by human interference such as the creation of artificial forest edges. Field removal experiments may clarify if invasive plants are detrimental to native plant regeneration and how this is related to other local factors.
